Scissor – cut

Our Dover Print & Drawing Club meetings (online via zoom since the 1st lock-down) are the perfect opportunity to relax amongst friends and create. There is no need to leave the house, hurry to a particular venue, or transport heavy materials; everything falls easily to hand within the comfort of the home studio.

Last Monday, after a full-on day, the evening club meeting presented an opportunity to chill for a while and explore shapes without any preconceived ideas. I usually cut collages with a medical scalpel, but this time I decided to just cut some paper with an ordinary pair of steel hand scissors, and see what might happen. Finding that I was enjoying the uneven line of each cut, I began layering the cut paper rather akin to a manual desktop form of Photoshop, moving shapes around before pausing some designs by holding the various elements in place with small strips removable tape. The four examples below had evolved in a similar manner, before settling upon their current form and paper finally fixed in place with permanent adhesive.

New Photo Trail, Kearsney

‘The River Runs Through’ is a photographic trail in Kearsney exploring images of streams and lakes within the park landscape. Kearsney Abbey and Russell Gardens are the most popular, historic parks in Dover which are located 2.5 miles north west of Dover town centre in the Alkham Valley, part of the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Please see the Kearney Parks website to discover more:
https://www.kearsneyparks.co.uk/Home.aspx

Kearsney Abbey and Russell Gardens provides many opportunities to take really beautiful photographs. Why not download the Kearsney Parks photography trail and capture what you see on the way? The trail has been developed by photographer/artist Mike Tedder. He suggests a route to follow and has given lots of tips for photos that you might like to photograph. https://www.kearsneyparks.co.uk/Resources/Photography.aspx

Dover flint maps

Flint maps – Dover topographical contour maps inspired by and in synthesis with drawings of local flint boulders from the chalk cliffs. The three flint maps relate to the chalk lanscapes of Dover Castle mount, Langdon Cliffs and the Western Heights. Acrylic paint on black Canford paper.

Reflections on the Landscape: Against the Tide

24/25 February 2018 10 – 6pm
River Garage Studios, River Street, River, Kent CT17 0RB

Reflections on the Landscape: Against the tide will be the inaugural exhibition held at the recently opened River Garage Studios. The exhibition will show work from nine artists based in Dover.
Each artist voluntarily submitted work to be included in the exhibition. The only criteria for their selection was that they lived and worked in Dover and the surrounding area. As a result their work has been influenced by the unique visual and cultural history of the town.
Dover is moulded by its tide, a place always bringing in new life and ideas, as well as a place shaped and defined by its history. It is a town as relevant today as it has ever been.
Through bringing these artists together we can reflect on the influence of place and environment on their work; whether economic, cultural, visual or ecological.

Exhibiting artists:
Kate Beaugie – Joseph Black – Drew Burrett – Samuel Capell – Paul Dagys –
Benjamin Hunt – Joanna Jones – Clare Smith – Mike Tedder

Curated by Joseph Black and Louise Webb
Free entry.
